Certain states will have certain restrictions on what is and is not legal.
If you are unsure if an item is legal in your state or not, click below to read some guidelines on your state's restrictions and consult your local FFL to determine the legality of a firearm in your particular state.

ARIZONA STATE RESTRICTIONS
ACCESSORIES/AMMUNITION
Requires a valid, government-issued, photo ID card (Such as a Driver’s License) in order to purchase Stun Guns and TASERs
Active LE Officers are exempt.
CALIFORNIA STATE RESTRICTIONS
RIFLES
Prohibited:
.50 BMG caliber rifles (No .50 cal whatsoever in Los Angeles or San Francisco).
Semi-automatic centerfire rifles with a fixed magazine that exceeds 10 rounds.
Semi-automatic centerfire rifles that have an overall length of less than 30”.
Semi-automatic centerfire rifles that have the capacity to accept a detachable magazine AND any one of the following features:
- Pistol grip
- Thumbhole stock
- Folding / telescoping stock
- Grenade of flare launcher o Flash suppressor
- Foregrip
Permitted:
Any “assault”-style rifle must have a fixed magazine (bullet button in place of typical magazine release) with a 10 round capacity or fewer to ship.
All rimfire caliber rifles with magazine capacity of 10 rounds or fewer (e.g.: .22 LR, 17HMR, etc.) are permitted, excluding rifles with tubular magazines in lever-action firearms, which do not have magazine restrictions. Rimfire caliber rifles are not considered “assault weapons” and can have features that centerfire rifles cannot.
Rimfire with a capacity of more than 10 can be purchased by LE with proper LE Credentials on file.
Rifles of any caliber with tubular magazines (e.g. lever action) may have a capacity of more than 10 rounds (Cal. Penal Code S.16740).
Springfield M1As will be legal if “CA” or “AA” is indicated in the model number (these models will have a muzzle brake instead of a flash hider).
Stripped AR receivers are permitted, barring inclusion on Appendices A, B, or C (see "Rifle Flowchart" link at top of page). Before shipping, customer must verify with the FFL dealer that they will accept the transfer. Complete AR lower receivers must have "fixed magazine" (e.g. bullet button) and not include prohibited features listed above, nor appear as a named item on Appendices A, B, or C (see "Rifle Flowchart" link at top of page).
SHOTGUNS
Prohibited:
Shotguns with revolving cylinders (e.g. Franchi SPAS 12, USAS-12, Striker-12 or Streetsweeper). Semi-automatic shotgun that has both a folding / telescoping stock and a pistol grip, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
Semi-automatic shotgun that has the ability to accept any detachable magazine.
Semi-automatic shotguns with pistol grips must have a fixed stock to be legal.
HANDGUNS
Must be on Department of Justice (DOJ) Handgun Roster to ship*. Every specification for the firearm must
match what is on the roster, otherwise it cannot be shipped.
Prohibited if semi-automatic, has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any of the following features:
Threaded barrel capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or suppressor. o Second handgrip
Barrel shroud
Capacity to accept a detachable magazine outside the pistol grip
Cannot exceed 10+1 round capacity. Mares Legs are not compliant.
Los Angeles and San Francisco:
“Ultra-compact” handguns are prohibited and are defined as:
Overall length of 6 3⁄4 inches or less, OR
Overall height of 4 1⁄2 inches or less (measured with magazine detached).
*Permissible handguns that are NOT on the handgun roster:
Single-action revolvers that have at least a 5 round capacity with a barrel length of at least 3 inches and an overall length of at least 7 1⁄2 inches are permitted.
Single-shot pistols that are top-break or bolt-action with a barrel length of at least 6 inches and have an overall length of at least 10 1/2 inches are permitted.
ACCESSORIES/AMMUNITION
Exploding targets, marketed as separate binary components and sold under trade names such as Tannerite, H2 and Last Man Standing (not inclusive), are prohibited.
Batons are prohibited.
ASP batons and any instrument / weapon known as a Blackjack, Slungshot, Billy, Sandclub, Sap or Sandbag are prohibited.
No .50 BMG ammunition to California.
So-called "bumpfire" stocks and other devices that attach to a semiautomatic firearm which allow discharge of two or more shots in a burst or increase the rate of fire are prohibited (e.g. Slide Fire, Fostech etc).
Certain cities and municipalities may have regulations regarding stun guns, TASER, or pepper sprays. By purchasing one of these items from Gunbuyer.com, you are certifying under penalty of law that you are eligible to purchase and possess a stun gun, TASER or defense sprays from Gunbuyer.com. Pepper spray is limited to 2.5oz containers or smaller.
AR upper receivers (stripped, barreled, or complete with a 16” barrel minimum) are permitted.
All magazines are limited to 10 rounds or fewer.
Large-capacity, magazine-conversion kits, which include, but are not limited to, the body, spring, follower, and floor or end plate, capable of converting an ammunition feeding device into a large-capacity magazine are prohibited.
Rifle caliber ammunition not shipped to the city of Oakland.
Ammunition must be shipped to an FFL dealer in the following cities*:
- Los Angeles
- Sacramento
- San Francisco
*Within City Proper – Counties are not included in this restriction
OTHER RESTRICTIONS
We will require a copy of the customer’s drivers license to keep on file for anyone ordering firearms.
We do not ship to C&R dealers in California. Rossi Circuit Judge is prohibited.
LAW ENFORCEMENT EXEMPTIONS
State of California ACTIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT officers and peace officers with proper credentials on file MAY purchase off-roster handguns. This exemption includes FEDERAL law enforcement officers residing or working in California.
Law Enforcement (including federal) can purchase non-compliant ARs and so-called “assault pistols” as long as the firearm is being used for duty use only. Department letterhead required and must ship to a dealer with an “assault weapon” permit.
High capacity magazines can also be purchased, however they must be shipped to an FFL. Credentials need to be on file prior to shipment.
Active LE are able to purchase stun guns, TASERs, defense spray, and batons.
Certain entities (departments or city/county offices) and sworn officers (individuals) are eligible to purchase “off-roster” handguns. These entities/officers must have satisfactorily completed the firearms portion of a training course prescribed by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training pursuant to CA Section 832. COLORADO STATE RESTRICTIONS
RIFLES
Prohibited:
Rifles that come with over a 15 round capacity magazine from the manufacturer.
(Does not include .22LR tube-fed rifles or tubular magazines contained in a lever action rifle of any caliber.*)
SHOTGUNS
Prohibited:
A fixed, tubular shotgun magazine that holds more than 28 inches of shotgun shells, including any extension device that is attached to the magazine and holds additional shells.*
Shotguns that come with a non-tubular, detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip, or similar device that is capable of accepting more than 8 shotgun shells when combined with a fixed magazine.*
HANDGUNS
Prohibited:
Handguns that come with over a 15 round capacity magazine from the manufacturer.
ACCESSORIES/AMMUNITION
Prohibited:
Magazines exceeding 15 rounds.
A non-tubular, detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip, or similar device that is capable of accepting more than 8 shotgun shells when combined with a fixed magazine.*
Denver and Denver County Restrictions
RIFLES
Prohibited:
All semi-automatic, centerfire rifles with a detachable magazine with a capacity of fifteen (15) or more rounds.
SHOTGUNS
Prohibited:
All semi-automatic shotguns with a folding stock or a capacity of more than six (6) rounds OR both.
HANDGUNS
Prohibited:
All semi-automatic pistols that are modifications of rifles having the same make, caliber, and action design but a shorter barrel and no rear stock or modifications of fully automatic weapons originally designed to accept magazines with a capacity of fifteen (15) or more rounds.
(Firearms using rimfire ammunition are excluded from the above restrictions)
LAW ENFORCEMENT EXEMPTIONS
Law enforcement officers may purchase non-compliant firearms (including magazines above the capacity restriction) for DUTY USE ONL Y and must have a department letterhead with authorization from their employer. LE letterheads must be submitted for each purchase.
CONNECTICUT STATE RESTRICTIONS
Connecticut Restricted Assault Weapons List
Anything on the above list cannot be shipped to Connecticut
RIFLES
Prohibited:
Semi-automatic rifles with a detachable magazine and one or more of the following features:
- Folding / telescoping stock
- Pistol grip
- Bayonet mount
- Flash suppressor
- Threaded barrel
- Grenade launcher
- Magazine capacity exceeding 10 rounds
Any Semi-auto, centerfire rifle that has or accepts a magazine with a capacity exceeding five (5) rounds is prohibited to any person under twenty-one years of age.
.22 Rimfire rifles with detachable magazines and any two of the following features:
- Pistol grip
- Folding / telescoping stock
- Bayonet mount
- Flash suppressor
- Threaded barrel
No upper or lower AR receivers.
SHOTGUNS
Prohibited:
Semi-automatic shotguns that have at least two of the following features:
- Folding / telescoping stock
- Pistol grip
- Fixed magazine over 5 rounds
- Ability to accept a detachable magazine
HANDGUNS
Phohibited:
Semi-automatic handguns with a detachable magazine and one or more of the following features:
- Magazine that attaches to the firearm outside the pistol grip
- Barrel shroud
- Manufactured weight of 50 oz or more
- Threaded barrel
- Magazine capacity exceeding 10 rounds
ACCESSORIES/AMMUNITION
No folding / telescoping stocks.
No upper receivers for ARs.
No AR accessories.
No magazines exceeding 10 rounds.
No online bulletproof vest sales.
Only holders of a valid CT Carry Permit, Eligibility Certification, Long Gun Eligibility Certificate, or Ammunition Certificate and a State-Issued Photo ID will be able to purchase ammunition and/or magazines.
LAW ENFORCEMENT EXEMPTIONS
Law enforcement officers are exempt from “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazine restrictions listed above with Department Letterhead authorizing the purchase.
Active-duty military with military ID are exempt from high-capacity magazine prohibitions listed above.
HAWAII/ALASKA STATE RESTRICTIONS
HAWAII
Prohibited:
Handguns with a capacity exceeding 10 rounds.
Any pistol or revolver, the frame or receiver of which is a die casting of zinc alloy, which has a melting temperature of less than 800 degrees F: Cobra, Phoenix Arms, Heritage Arms firearms, Walther rimfire pistols, and GSG rimfire pistols are prohibited.
Semiautomatic handguns which accept a detachable magazine and have TWO or more of the following features:
- Magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip
- Threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward hand grip or silencer
- Barrel shroud
- Manufactured weight of 50 oz or more (unloaded)
- Centerfire pistol with an overall length of 12 inches or more
- Semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm (not to include a firearm with a barrel 16” or more in length)
No ammunition or ammunition components.
No stun guns or TASERs
No pressurized aerosol spray products (including pepper spray).
LAW ENFORCEMENT EXEMPTIONS
Law Enforcement is exempt from the above (with proper credentials submitted).
ALASKA
No ammunition or ammunition components.
No pressurized aerosol spray products (including pepper spray).
ILLINOIS STATE RESTRICTIONS
STATEWIDE RESTRICTIONS
- Customer must have FOID (Firearm Owner’s ID) to purchase ammunition anywhere in Illinois. It must be faxed or emailed to us prior to shipment.
- Prohibited: Any handgun having a barrel, slide, frame or receiver that has a die casting of zinc alloy or any other non- homogenous metal, which will melt or deform at a temperature of 800 degrees F or less including: Cobra, Phoenix Arms, Heritage Arms, Hi-Point, Walther rimfire pistols, and GSG rimfire pistols.
- ALL MUZZLELOADERS / BLACKPOWDER FIREARMS (handguns, long guns) MUST SHIP TO AN FFL DEALER.
- Stun Guns and TASERs require an FFL Transfer.

CITY OF CHICAGO

- Single-shot rifles are permitted.

Prohibited: a semiautomatic shotgun that has one or more of the following:
- Only a pistol grip without a stock attached;
- Any feature capable of functioning as a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand; A folding, telescoping, or thumbhole stock;
- A fixed magazine capacity in excess of five rounds; or
- An ability to accept a detachable magazine.
- Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder is prohibited.
- Any shotgun with a fixed magazine capacity in excess of 5 rounds is prohibited.
HANDGUNS
Prohibited: are semiautomatic pistols that have a detachable magazine AND two or more of the following:
- Any feature capable of functioning as a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand
- A folding, telescoping or thumbhole stock
- Barrel shroud
- Muzzle brake / muzzle compensator
- Capacity to accept a detachable magazine outside the pistol grip
ACCESSORIES / AMMUNTION
- Box-type detachable magazines with a capacity over 10 rounds are prohibited only for long-guns. No collapsible, folding or thumbhole stocks.
- No flash hiders.
- No accessory capable of functioning as a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand.

RIFLES
- Semiautomatic rifles are prohibited.
- AR or AK patterns receivers are prohibited.
SHOTGUNS
- Semiautomatic shotguns are prohibited.
- Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder is prohibited.
- Any slide-action shotgun with a magazine capacity of 15 rounds or fewer is permitted.
HANDGUNS
Prohibited are semiautomatic pistols that have a detachable magazine AND two or more of the following:
- An ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip
- Threaded barrel
- Barrel shroud
- A manufactured weight of fifty (50) ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded
- A semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm
ACCESSORIES / AMMUNTION
- Long-gun magazines with a capacity of 15 rounds or more are prohibited.
- Batons are prohibited.
CITY OF HIGHLAND PARK
RIFLES
Prohibited:
- AR or AK patterns receivers are prohibited.
- A semiautomatic rifle that has a fixed magazine, that has the capacity to accept more than ten rounds of ammunition.
- A semiautomatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a magazine with capacity over ten (10) rounds (detachable or otherwise) AND one or more of the following:
- Only a pistol grip without a stock attached.
- Any feature capable of functioning as a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand.
- A folding, telescoping or thumbhole stock.
- A shroud attached to the barrel, or that partially or completely encircles the barrel, allowing the bearer to hold the firearm with the non-trigger hand without being burned, but excluding a slide that encloses the barrel.
- A muzzle brake or muzzle compensator.

- An ability to accept a detachable magazine.
- Additionally, the following shotguns or copies or duplicates thereof are specifically prohibited: Armscor 30 BG;
- SPAS 12 or LAW 12;
- Striker 12; or
- Streetsweeper
HANDGUNS
Prohibited:
- A semiautomatic pistol that has a fixed magzine, that has the capacity to accept more than ten (10) rounds of ammunition.
- A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and has one or more of the following:
- Any feature capable of functioning as a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand;
- A folding, telescoping or thumbhole stock;
- A shroud attached to the barrel, or that partially or completely encircles the barrel, allowing the bearer to hold the Firearm with the non-trigger hand without being burned, but excluding a slide that encloses the barrel;
- A muzzle brake or muzzle compensator;
- The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
- Additionally, the following pistols or copies or duplicates thereof are specifically prohibited: Calico M-110;
- MAC-10, MAC-11, OR MPA3;
- Olympic Arms OA;
- TEC-9, TEC-DC9; TEC-22 Scorpion, or AB-10; or UZI
ACCESSORIES / AMMUNTION
Prohibited:
- Any magazine with capacity of more than ten (10) rounds.
LAW ENFORCEMENT EXEMPTIONS
FOID required for Law Enforcement ammunition purchases. It must be faxed or emailed to us prior to shipment.
City of Chicago:
- NO LEO exemptions (even with department letterhead).
Cook County:
- Law Enforcement Officers may purchase restricted items for DUTY USE ONLY and must submit a purchasing officer statement on their department letterhead. LE letterheads must be submitted for each purchase.
City of Aurora:
- Law Enforcement Officers may purchase restricted items for DUTY USE ONLY and must submit a purchasing officer statement on their department letterhead. LE letterheads must be submitted for each purchase.
- Private Security Contractors, Private Detectives and Private Alarm Contractors may purchase restricted items for DUTY USE ONLY and must submit a copy of their FAC (Firearms Authorization Card). Note: FAC is not the same as a FOID card.
City of Highland Park
- Active law enforcement officers may purchase restricted items for DUTY USE ONLY and must submit a purchasing officer statement on their department letterhead. LE letterheads must be submitted for each purchase.
MARYLAND STATE RESTRICTIONS
RIFLES
Prohibited:
- Rifles with a capacity over 10 rounds.
- Semi-automatic centerfire rifles that can accept a detachable magazine and have any TWO of the following features:
- Folding stock (Not including telescoping [collapsible] stock)
- Grenade launcher or flare launcher
- Flash suppressor
- Semi-automatic centerfire rifles that have an overall length of less than 29 inches.
- Stripped lower receivers permitted. Complete lower receivers without prohibited characteristics (above) are permitted.
The above restrictions do not apply to rimfire rifles with non-detachable magazines.
AR rifles not otherwise prohibited (see above) must possess a heavy-barrel contour (no cutouts).
HANDGUNS
Prohibited:
- Handguns with a capacity over 10 rounds.

MICHIGAN STATE RESTRICTIONS
HANDGUNS
Prohibited:
- Pistols with an overall length greater than 26” (For example, check the overall length of AR / AK pistols to be certain of compliance)
ACCESSORIES/AMMUNITION
- No sales are permitted for Stun Guns or TASERs
- Defense Sprays are restricted to 1.2oz (35 gram) container size
LEO EXEMPTIONS
Active LE Officers are exempt from the above restrictions.
MINNESOTA STATE RESTRICTIONS
HANDGUNS
Prohibited:
- Handguns (other than antique firearms) where the frame, barrel, cylinder, slide or breech-lock is composed of any material with a melting point of less than 1,000 degrees F, or an ultimate tensile strength of less than 55,000 psi, or comprised of any powdered metal having a density of less than 7.5 grams/cubic centimeter.
- Walther rimfire pistols, Cobra, Phoenix Arms, Hi-Point, Heritage Arms, and GSG rimfire pistols.

OPTIONS FOR OBTAINING A PERMIT TO PURCHASE/TRANSFER
Option 1
- Fill out a Minnesota Uniform Firearm Application/Receipt Permit to Purchase/Transfer. Submit the application to your local police chief, or if your municipality does not have a police department, to your county's sheriff. The law enforcement agency will conduct a series of background-related checks to assure you meet eligibility requirements established in state law.
- Once those checks are complete, a one-year permit to purchase a handgun in Minnesota will be issued. If you are applying for a permit to transfer the law enforcement agency must notify you of its status within seven days of receipt.
Option 2
- If you want to make a one-time purchase of a handgun from a dealer and you do not have a permit to purchase, you may apply directly at the gun shop where you will purchase the handgun. The gun shop will require you to complete a consent form that allows them to conduct a name and date-of-birth background check to determine your eligibility to purchase a gun. However, some businesses may choose to follow other business practices. The gun shops are entitled to charge a fee for this service.
Option 3
- Possession of a valid, Minnesota Permit to Carry constitutes a permit to purchase. You do not need a separate permit to purchase.

NEW JERSEY STATE RESTRICTIONS
RIFLES
Prohibited:
- Semi-automatic rifles that are capable of receiving a detachable magazine and has at least two of the following features:
- Folding / telescoping stock
- Pistol grip
- Bayonet lug
- Flash suppressor
- Threaded barrel
- Grenade launcher
Permitted:
- Beretta CX4 carbine
- Colt Match Target Series
- Springfield M1A (post 1994 mfg) – either with the flash hider or the CA version with muzzle brake Black powder / Muzzle-loading rifles must be shipped to a NJ FFL for transfer.
15 round capacity limit
SHOTGUNS
Prohibited:
- A semi-automatic shotgun with either a magazine capacity exceeding six rounds, a folding stock or a pistol grip.
Permitted:
- Black powder / Muzzle-loading shotguns must be shipped to a NJ FFL for transfer.
HANDGUNS
Prohibited:
- Semi-automatic handguns that have the ability to accept a detachable magazine and at least two of the following features:
- Magazine that attaches outside of the pistol grip
- Manufactured weight of 50oz or more when the pistol is unloaded
- Threaded barrel
- Barrel shroud
- Semi-automatic version of an automatic firearm
Permitted:
- All handguns, except prohibited handguns detailed above, and regardless of the nature of operation, to include a propelling force that is centerfire; rimfire; black powder; compressed air, gas or vapor; spring-operation; or by elastic band must transfer via FFL.
- Starter pistols incapable of expelling any type of bullet or missile are exempt from the FFL transfer requirement.
ACCESSORIES/AMMUNITION
Prohibited:
- Magazines exceeding 15 rounds.
- Handgun Ammunition Qualifier: Handgun ammunition is defined by NJ Law as ammunition specifically designed to be used only in a handgun. For purchase of handgun ammunition, the purchaser must present a valid firearms purchasers identification card, a valid permit to purchase a handgun, or a valid permit to carry a handgun.
- No stun guns or TASERs
- No defense sprays
OTHER RESTRICTIONS
- We do not ship to C&R dealers in New Jersey.
